EXCLUSIVE: How Nigerian banks are taking your money

Francis Agadaga still remembers events of that fateful evening. He could have been a widower by now. On September 12, 2014, he rushed to an Automated Teller Machine point in his neighbourhood at Igando, a Lagos suburb, to pick some cash with which to take his ailing wife, Sandra, to the hospital. It was a tough period for the family.

The N7, 850 left in his bank account would go a long way in dousing the situation if he could get access to the fund. After inserting his card into one of the ATMs and requesting to withdraw N7, 000, what followed almost left the father of two in tears.

"“It was on a Sunday afternoon and we had just returned from church when my wife started feeling feverish,” he began. “Her temperature became so high that we needed to quickly rush her to a hospital. I didn’t have any money on me at the time and so I hurried to the nearest ATM point to withdraw the little money I had in the account.

OPINION: APC vs PDP - Why Nigeria Rooted For The Crazy Troublemaking Misfits

Richard Tayo from Makurdi, Benue State, says it is obvious why the APC emerged winners in the APC vs PDP political struggle:
Gone are the days when the acronym PDP (Peoples Democratic Party) was only so sufficient to win elections devoid of campaigns and strategies in Nigeria.

Gone are the days when it was only needed to identify with the acronym PDP to be home and dry in any election. Gone were the days when the PDP — the juggernaut, the seemingly unstoppable behemoth — ruled. The slogan of the largest political party in Africa, “Power to the people,” is the most hypocritical catchphrase I have ever heard of.

OPINION: Buhari Is Going To Hurt Us Before He Can Save Us

It is generally accepted that most Newspaper Editors know more than they let on. The ability to know what to use and what to withhold is part of your information management; it is also part of your professional and ethical responsibilities because some ‘truths’ can have unwholesome ripple effects if used in their entirety. I will give an example... I was an Assistant Editor in Punch at the height of the apartheid struggle.

Like every young man at the time, I was indignant and very impatient with the pace and nature of the international fight against apartheid. Until I had ‘an instructive conversation’ with the late Brigadier Joe Garba who was then our External Affairs Minister.  He specifically asked me to switch off the tape before he said “Do you know that there is not a single ‘Frontline State’ that can survive economically without South Africa? Many of them don’t even have access to seaports and depend on South Africa for imports.
